Sonny Gray fired a six-hit shutout for his first September win as the Oakland A’s clinched its third consecutive postseason berth Sunday, defeating the Texas Rangers 4-0 to avoid a Game 163 playoff against the Seattle Mariners.
After 2,001 games spread over 14 seasons, DH Adam Dunn will see his first postseason game. Acquired Aug. 31 from the Chicago White Sox, Dunn had three extra base hits over 24 games before going 0-3 in Oakland’s final regular season game.
The injury-depleted Rangers took five of its last seven games against the A’s. Oakland starter Jon Lester will face the Kansas City Royals for the one-game Wild Card Tuesday on the road.
